The reality that Sudanese facing

Before I was doing the researching about the group which I studied this time, the only thing I know is the name of this cultural group which is the South Sudan. Also, this region locates in Northern Africa. It is bordered by Egypt to the north, the Red Sea, Eritrea, and Ethiopia to the east, South Sudan to the south, the Central African Republic to the southwest, Chad to the west and Libya to the northwest.

I never thought the health problem is extremely serious in South Sudan. Sudanese people are deeply suffering from the diseases and other health problems. In the Sudan, health is always ignored by people. The wealthy situation for a cow is even more important than human beings. Also, I have to say the most health problem in the South Sudan is malnutrition. In my blog post, I discussed a lot about the serious malnutrition in Sudan, and used some pictures and sources to prove it. The significant cause of malnutrition is horrible food sources and bad health condition. It includes their living places; health care condition and how unserious doctors are. A lot of Sudanese live in the tent because they are suffering from the bad food sources. Also, the health condition is terrible. A lot of people do not even have a chance to go to hospital. The hospital in Sudan lacks a lot of equipment. When patients need help, they have to go to other country which close to the Sudan. What is more, a lot of Sudanese doctors are unhelpful because of their low salary. Their health care knowledge is also limit. In my blog post, there are two stories which shows how serious it is. Those elements make the Sudan in danger. In addition, even if Sudan has a lot of serious health situation, the landscape and custom in the South Sudan is still great. The traditional custom is really significant. For the landscape, one of the Sudanese whose name is Jalil al-Hamza upload a video to prove Sudan is the most beautiful country in the world. What I learned from researching is Sudanese are still suffering from the diseases, especially malnutrition.

As we learned in this course, Ethnocentrism is judging another culture solely by the values and standards of one’s own culture. At the same time, it’s also a kind of faith to that culture. Cultural relativism is the idea that a person’s beliefs and activities should be understood based on that person’s own culture. In my observation, one ethnocentrism example would be in the blog post 4 which talks about the customs about the Sudan. An author whose name is Jalil al-Hamza upload a video called “The most beautiful country in the world” instead of “one of the most beautiful country. One challenge I encountered for cultural relativism in my research would be in Sudan, a health value of a cow is even larger than a person. Personally, I think the base of a country is people. If all the people are in danger, then this country is done. Even if we say the value for all the life is equal, but right now, people on the top of food chain. Personally, I think the value of human is a little bit higher than other animals.

Basically, the research of ethnography is a method which is used to study for a group of people in their own culture. In this method, anthologist use to do some observational studies or having some conversations with those face to face. The purpose for this study is to see others behaviors or culture in their own ways instead of our own perspectives.   In my blog post, I searched how Sudanese suffer in the health issues and some of their customs by looking at pictures, stories and some videos. For example, through reading the Sudanese’s stories that how Sudanese suffer from the bad health care condition. Also, in those pictures, I learnt why the value of a cow is more important than human because animals can provide more food than human beings. Thorough the study of ethnography, I learnt how to understand different situation in different cultures in their own standpoint instead of using my  own.

For the videos in my blog posts, one digital strategy I used is searching the term of “Sudan traditional custom” on Youtube. Under the video, there are a part which is called more description. In this part, it has the license of this video. Based on the license, I can tell this is violating laws or not. For those pictures which I found for my post, one easy way to find was searching on the website which the librarian mentioned during the class. What I did is typing Sudan health problems and malnutrition. Most of the result is one the Wikipedia. On the bottom of the picture, it also shows what the license is. Then, I will know I can use this picture, and it is not violating copyright laws. For the sources which talks about the health problem in Sudan, I simply type the same thing on google. Then, find some credibility stories. Talking about the credibility of the sources, I have to make the author or organization have enough speaking power in this aspect. So, I would choose some famous organization such as Red Cross Society. Also, I need some Sudanese real experience to prove how serious of health problems in the Sudan.

Overview: This article states the bad health care condition in South Sudan. The author’s aunt died in Doctors’ Hospital in Khartoum because of the bad health care condition. He argued that almost all the doctors in the Sudan lack of the interests about the patients’ sickness history. They will judge the state of an illness by looking at the information which was proved by their family instead of evaluating by themselves. Also, there are no good condition health care facilities and equipment in the South Sudan. When medications which are not available in Sudan, the patients and their relatives have to move to other country which close to the Sudan. Besides, because of the high rate of tax, most of the doctors in the Sudan have lost, their ethical responsibility of caring for the patient. They care about money instead of the patients.

Also, the pictures in the video shows the dressing during the Sudanese Wedding. When Sudan women married to other men, there are some tattoos, gold bracelets on their hand. On the head of women who are going to marry, there is a red endshield and some gold jewelries. Besides, all the dressing color should be red. This is also similar to Chinese traditional wedding. Red is the symbol of lucky and happiness. Through listening this song, I can hear how excited when the Sudanese marry others. The author’s name for this video is called Bakri Elmaghrabi. The category of his videos is about people and blogs. Personally, since his category is people and blogs, his purpose might be education. There are beaches, deserts, oceans, mountains and rivers in Sudan. Also, this video shows that different people who live in different environment may have different dressing. On the desert, most of the people were kerchiefs and some staffs which can protect them from the storm. Sometimes, they would also graze some sheep and cows. On opposite, those people who lives close to the city would wear some white kerchiefs, and they used to play with their families around the tree. The author of this video is called Jalil al-Hamza. In the description part, he says that this video is about his home. So, I may infer he is a local Sudanese and a traveler or student. Also, he currently lives out of the Sudan. Sudan is in danger

One group which interests to me is called the Sudan. The Sudan also known as North Sudan since South Sudan’s independence and officially the Republic of the Sudan. This region locates in Northern Africa. It is bordered by Egypt to the north, the Red Sea, Eritrea, and Ethiopia to the east, South Sudan to the south, the Central African Republic to the southwest, Chad to the west and Libya to the northwest. This region interested me because the health issue in the Sudan is really serious. According to the research, in Gograil West County, some county in the Sudan cows are the most valuable thing in each family. However, the health care of human is always ignored. In the South Sudan, every hot afternoon, there are huge number of patients sitting on the ground because of serious some serious diseases such as Buruli ulcers. Also, the situation of malnutrition is also serious. The malnutrition is caused by the bad health condition instead of lacking food. In those places which contains the bad health condition, people do not have official health care, and they used to ask witch doctor for helping. Through reading those facts, I can see how hopeless they are.

These are three sources which discusses the health issue of Sudan.

This website is the maps of Sudan. In this map, we are going to see two different maps of Sudan, and they come from the same source. The left one shows the construction of the Sudan. It includes all the cities, rivers and other country which is near to the Sudan. The right map shows where the Sudan is on the earth. In other words, it’s a part of world map.

People are still suffering today.

The first example which surprised me is the failure of global health. After reading the data which are showed on the slide, I am shocked by the number of people who dead for different reasons. For example, there around 39 million people with HIV right now, 4.1 million new infections and 2.8 million deaths per year. Before reading the statues, I would never know how serious is global health. The second point which surprised me is the success of global health. Even if we have so many people died because of so many different reasons, our global health are still successful in so many part in our society. For example, Immunization coverage approximately 75-80% worldwide; Almost elimination of polio and measles. I remembered that when I was a child, it was really easy to get polio and measles. As time went by, our skill of health care growth in a fast way. In other words, people can stop worrying some diseases such as polio and measles. When I was a child, I never think our health care can prevent us from these two diseases. The third fact which shocked me is poverty. According to the slides, there are more than 1 billion live on less than $1/day; Another 1.5 billion live on less than $2/day. Also, poverty is not only talking about money, but also containing poor nutrition and health. These statics totally changed my opinion about poverty. Before reading these slides, I only know that poverty is about money. Also, I have no idea of the reality which is extremely cure.

In this assignment, I think the most challenge for me is the researching part. As a international student, reading is a huge “roadblock” for me. Also, during the process of researching, it really to find a report which relates to health issues. A lot of post contains the keyword, but they are not talking about the health issues. For the most successful part in this assignment, I have to say it is the first paragraph in this assignment. Even if there are too many slides, most of them is statics. It is really easy to see the point and find information from those statics.
